Breath No More

Inspired by: Breathe no more by Evanescence

******

The sound of the rain echoed throughout the house causing it to no longer be silent. The small house was dark and lifeless. Only the rain could be heard inside. Not a thing stirred.

Zelda Avalon sighed, sitting up in her king sized bed, sadness overcoming her face.

She couldn't bear to be in the bed anymore.

Quickly, Zelda ripped the covers off herself and moved her feet to touch the cold floor.

Zelda's heart tore even more as she walked down the hall way with pictures all along the walls.

Pictures of her.

Pictures of him.

Zelda looked down and ran into the kitchen, longing to get out of there.

Zelda soon entered the dark kitchen and she flicked on the light.

Her heart ripped even more as she stared at the newspapers. Right where he had left them.

Zelda turned her head to her coffee pot and began to advance to it.

She finally reached it after what seemed like forever to her and she pulled out the ingredients to get the coffee started.

She pushed the start button and instinctively opened the cabinet and grabbed two mugs.

Once she realized what she had done, her heart ripped completely in two.

"Why…?" She whispered to herself. "Why did you have to leave me…?"

She waited for a reply and then it hit her again. She wasn't going to get one. She was really alone. He was really gone.

Zelda then and there dropped to the floor and began to cry.

It has been 19 hours since his death.

'All cause of a bank robbery.'

Zelda balled up her fists and struggled to keep it together.

They had been together for eight months in their little house. Eight months with him. Pregnant for three, and she never had a chance to tell him.

A man as strong as him, and his life was taken at a bank robbery.

Zelda once again remembered the coffee she had put on.

She slowly got up and turned it off and poured the coffee down the sink. "I hate coffee," she muttered, "Why am I still making it for him when he's…"

Zelda stopped there.

Memories of yesterday flew through her mind.

"I didn't even have a chance to say goodbye."

*Flashback*

Zelda poured his coffee into his mug and then poured some in her mug for herself.

Even though she hated coffee, he loved it. In the morning, though, she'd sit and drink coffee with him. Oh, what love can do to a person…

"Sweetie? Is it ready yet? I have to run to the bank before work so I'm kind of in a hurry this morning."

Zelda turned around, mugs in hand, and smiled to her husband. "Here."

He took it and smiled. "Thanks."

Zelda nodded and took a sip, trying to hold back her disgust. 'Coffee tastes awful…'

"Hey, Malon called late last night. She said something about a criminal and she told me that we should be on the lookout. If you see or hear anything suspicious, you run away, got it? You go to Malon or Midna and stay with out of them. I don't care if we get robbed, I want you safe, okay?"

Zelda laughed and put down her mug. "Link, don't worry. I'm not defenseless. I'm part Sheikah, remember?"

"I know. But I'm not taking any chances. If you die, I'm dying with you." Link smiled, wrapping an arm around Zelda. His eyes slowly wandered to the clock and he quickly put his mug down and threw the newspapers he had in his hand on the kitchen counter, grabbing his briefcase.

"You have to go already?" Zelda asked, pained to see him leave her an hour before normal.

"Yeah, sorry." Link said, glancing her way. "I love you, and I'll see you later." He called as he ran to the door.

"I love you, too! Be careful!" Zelda called to him as he opened the door.

"Bye!" He called.

"Good-" the door then slammed shut. "…Bye…"

******

Zelda opened the door and without a care in the world, ran out.

No one else knew of his death but the police and the other hostages that witnessed the kill.

No one really knew of her pain, though.

Zelda quickly ran thought the woods and her tears began to blend with the rain.

She didn't care what happened to her.

It didn't matter anymore.

He was gone. Forever this time.

After a few minutes, she reached a familiar door.

Malon's house.

She was Link's little sister. How would she take the news?

'Should I?'

Zelda looked down and she fell down into the mud.

It was no use. Nothing could make her feel better. And why tell someone else of it?

He was gone and no one could change that.

Zelda could hear the door to Malon's house open, but didn't look up.

"Zelda?" Someone asked, not Malon, but her husband, Sheik.

Zelda sniffed and nodded her drooping head, hair hiding her face and tears, blinding her from Sheik's expression.

"Malon!" Sheik called into the house. "Zelda's here!"

She could hear Malon's voice get nearer as she walked to the door. "I didn't hear a knock…"

"I spotted her through the window."

"What window?"

"The living room window."

"Why did-" she stopped. "Zelda?!"

Malon quickly ran up to the blonde and bent down, moving her hair from her eyes.

"Oh, we need to get you inside…"

***

Zelda wrapped the blanket around herself tighter as Malon came to her with some hot chocolate.

"Zel, here." She held it out for Zelda to take, but she refused.

Malon sighed and placed the mug on the coffee table and looked to Zelda.

"What happened?"

Zelda closed her eyes tight and she sniffed. "L-Link…"

Malon looked at her with a blank expression for a second and then it hit her.

"Oh, Zel…" She whispered, tears forming in her eyes. "H-How?"

"B-Bank R-R-Robbery…"

Malon threw her arms around her friend and she tried to comfort her all she could.

"Oh Zel… I'm so sorry. I'm going to miss him, too. I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry."

Sheik walked in and saw the two girls crying on the couch. "Oh… This can't be good."

Malon looked up with her now red face. She got up slowly, leaving Zelda on the couch, sulking.

"Sheik," Malon whispered, pulling him into the kitchen.

"Yes?" he asked, a look of worry plastered on his face.

"It… It's Link," Malon spat out.

Sheik's heart started to rip. His best friend since preschool… dead… He just knew it. The way Zelda came here crying the way she did and how Malon's crying right now…

"He… He was killed in the bank robbery yesterday," she finished, running into his arms. "He… He's gone Sheik… I can't believe he's gone. My big brothers gone…"

Sheik wrapped his arms around her and he kissed the top of her head.

"I can't believe it either Mal," he whispered into her right ear.

***

Zelda stared at the men as they lowered her husband's body into the ground and began to cover the coffin in dirt.

Malon stood next to her on one side, Midna on the other.

She still had friends, but what was life without Link?

Nothing. That's what it is.

***

Zelda sat in her and Link's kitchen as Malon, Midna, and Sheik helped her get all the stuff out of her house. She wasn't going to stay here. She couldn't.

Every time she would wake up and go to the kitchen, she would be reminded of him.

She couldn't bear that.

Waking up just to be reminded that she was alone…

"Zel, I think we're done in your room. You want to call it a day?" Sheik asked, poking his head in the kitchen.

"No, I want to finish today." Zelda said, her voice stronger then it's been in a few weeks.

Sheik nodded as he walked out to the mover's truck.

***

Zelda looked back at her empty house on last time. The house she lived in. The house Link built for her.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, lighting the match.

Bravely, she threw the match to the house and it instantly caught on fire.

Malon came up from behind her and hugged her, tears escaping her eyes.

Zelda finally lost her composure and she sobbed onto Malon's shoulder as her house burned down.

"I'm so sorry…"

***

"Grandma! Grandma!"

Zelda looked up slowly to see her little grandchild, Talo, jumping up and down in front of her. "Yes?"

"Is this grandpa!?" Talo then shoved a picture of her and Link on their wedding day, both of them smiling as they ran through to their car as people threw rice in the air and at them.

Zelda's heart tore as she saw the picture. "Why, yes. That is."

"You looked pretty…" Her granddaughter, Tetra, said.

"Why thank you." Zelda smiled. "Wasn't your grandfather handsome?"

"Yeah…" Tetra smiled, studying the picture some more.

"What happened to him?" Talo asked, handing the picture to Zelda.

"Oh…" Zelda laughed. "He just… died. It was his time to go."

"When did he, Grandma?" Tetra asked.

"Um… It was when I was 22... So 45 years ago." Zelda answered, shocked by how long it had been since she had seen him and heard his deep voice. How long it had been since they kissed…

"Wow…" Talo sighed. "That was like… before I was born…"

Zelda chuckled and nodded. "Yes. Before you were born, Talo."

"Grandma? Was he nice?" Tetra asked, quietly.

"Yes. Very kind to me. He was the sweetest man I ever met. We were deeply in love."

"What about Uncle Sheik?" Talo asked.

"He was not as nice, but nice."

***

Zelda continued to look through her old wedding pictures.

He was really handsome…

She smiled and turned the page. Eventually she got to the end. The last picture.

The picture that Link took of them while they were kissing on their honeymoon.

Zelda smiled and took in a breath.

"I love you, Link. You made me happy, never once made me sad. You taught me to love and cherish the moments with my loved ones. You taught me to let my heart go on without you. You gave me a wonderful family and wonderful friends. And I'm very grateful. I'll see you soon."

And with that, she took in her last breath that she would breathe. "My heart no longer has to go on. I breathe no more now. I love…" 'You.'
SADDEST. SHORT. STORY. I'VE. EVER. WRITTEN.

Don't expect more like this.

I nearly gave up in the middle of it cause I couldn't take how sad I was making it.

If you don't think this is sad, you must be a robot or something.

I didn't cry while writing it, but I felt like it.

I know your probably thinking, "If you hate writing sad things, why did you write this?"

After I wrote it, I felt, better then a have for over a year.
